Today marks World Physical Therapy Day!
The theme this year is “Movement for Health”
Why should we move more?
If we look into the future, it is estimated that the global population will be about 9.6 billion people by the year 2050. A staggering 2 billion of these people will be over the age of 60.
We need to move to add life to our years!
Physically active people have a 50 percent lower risk of a functional limitation and a 40 percent lower death rate. If medical treatment enables us to live longer, we will have to stay healthy for longer! There is no use in living longer, but not having quality of life!
In older individuals with age related conditions like strokes and dementia, physical therapists promote mobility, independence and quality of life.
Physical therapy led exercise programs for older people reduce falls by 32%. Serious injuries occur in up to 25 % of elderly patients that fall.
Physiotherapists are movement and exercise specialists and can evaluate you and prescribe the movements you need to do to add life to your years!
